Emirates Green Building Council (EmiratesGBC), an independent forum aimed at conserving the environment by strengthening and promoting green building practices, today announced the winners of the 2017 MENA Green Building Awards that recognise innovation, creativity and excellence in promoting sustainability best practices. “The project’s success can be attributed to the high level of innovation and intricate planning of the EEMs implemented. The strategy used for reduction of the asset’s energy consumption and carbon footprint involves the optimization and control of the asset’s ventilation based on the demand of the hotel guests. This is the largest hotel and/or resort in the region to have this measure implemented. The asset only consumes the energy that it requires at any given time, which has resulted in substantial energy and cost savings, in addition to guest comfort and simplified O&M for the FM team. The efficiency measures implemented have resulted in approx. 9 mil. kWh of energy savings. The hotel was able to pay for the measures from the savings generated by the project over the first year. The on-going energy management has reduced the time and effort required by the FM team to operate and maintain the systems and equipment. This resulted in an increase in asset value for the building owner as well as an increase in profitability due to the avoided energy use.

From an environmental impact standpoint, the reduction has lowered the hotels’ carbon footprint, making it one of the greenest and energy efficient hotels in the region when compared to similar ones. The implementation of the EEMs has resulted in savings of AED 2.5 mil. over the last year. The initial investment has been recovered from the savings and, at the same time, the overall operations and maintenance cost for the owner has been reduced. The energy reduction is equivalent to removing 4,500 metric tons of Carbon Dioxide from the atmosphere. This amount is equivalent to consuming 10,500 barrels of oil. Finally, since new equipment and technology has been installed and implemented, the asset value has increased by approx. AED 31 mil.”
